"I'm here to encourage you to overcome those challenges that have attempted to make a home in your mind, cheer you on throughout your movement practice, and remind you that it's not too late to start Day One!" - Joanna
MTMS was first started in 2018 as a physical dance community in Sabah, Malaysia. After meeting a few women, some in their mid 20s-40s and even 60s, I began to hear similar stories. Women interested in movement and dance, but never had the opportunity to do it as a child due to priorities and financial costs. Now, in their adulthood, they wanted to start but feared it was too late.
That's when I started the first Contemporary Dance class. They were 4 friends in their 30s-40s, some professional working women others in limbo, from various movement backgrounds. Some had never danced before, some didn't have a consistent workout plan, others hadn't danced for over 2 decades. Despite that, these women continued to come week after week because they had each other and left every class with the biggest smiles knowing they could do it.
After a year, this community of 4, grew to over 80 women, plus men and kids, and classes expanded to Pilates Mat, Ballet HIIT, Jazz Dance, Creative Dance and Improvisation. These Movers went from being apprehensive and fearful to realising their innate creativity, and ability to express grace and confident strength beyond physical movement.
When COVID-19 happened, I was in the middle of a geographical move to Kuala Lumpur. We realised dance classes weren't feasible with everyone's different space. It was a tough realisation. However, even though the movement method shifted to focus on Pilates, the vision remained the same: encouraging women to shift space through fear-less movement and share space with encouragement.
I've been so grateful to see women from Kuala Lumpur to Houston to Milan move together because of this season.
More than ever, we live in a time where our connections with others need uplifting - both in our bodies and for each other. If that's what you're looking for, welcome to your community :)
